Michelle with Grand Traverse County Commissioner Beth Friend and her daughter at the Grand Traverse GOP Leadership Breakfast Saturday, July 11.

This week, we are back in Lansing where progress has been slow on the state budget. I'm so pleased by all the excitement generated by my proposal to consolidate the departments of Natural Resources and Environmental Quality. We need more commonsense solutions like this if we hope to get Michigan's economy back on track.

Cherry Harvest Time!

After months of hard work, sweat and, yes probably a few tears, we finally get to collect the fruits of our labors - literally! The cherry harvest is upon us, and in the McManus family, that means all hands on deck to bring in this year's crop and get it to the processing facility. The annual harvest is a time for the whole family to pitch in. Living and working on my family's cherry farm has taught me the values of faith, family and hard work. Those are the values I brought to Lansing and those are the values I will bring to the Secretary of State's office.

Did you know that close to 75 percent of the tart cherries grown in the United States come from right here in Michigan? So whether it's cherry pie, chocolate-covered cherries or even that bright red maraschino cherry on top of a banana split, Michigan cherries are everywhere. Look for updates and photos in the coming weeks!

Essay of Alexis de Tocqueville's 'Democracy in America'

Comment below)

Causes Which Mitigate Tyranny

In Alexis de Tocqueville book 'Democracy in America', Volume 1 – there is a most interesting segment that deals with the "Causes Which Mitigate  Tyranny".

I want to briefly describe some of his writings concerning this matter as I believe his perspective, views and observations are well founded in reason and understanding.

Alexis begins his commentary and thought by speaking to the difference between "…a centralized government and a centralized administration…"

A centralized government is how the Founders originally set-up this nations Constitution- and rightly so to protect individual freedoms of Life, Liberty and Property while leaving the details to the states and communities to handle the issues that are closest to the people.

The danger speaks Alexis that has potential of happening is the descent of the centralized government into the details of public business; "and if, having regulated the great interests of the country, it could penetrate into the privacy of individual interests, freedom would soon be banished…"

Cannot add to what is said other then to reflect on how it is we have arrived at this cross road.  Purposeful or not, Corporate America has taken advantage of the tax structure by moving their manufacturing to a place free of taxation.  In the process, the value of employment moved to service sector, of less worth.  With the economy leveraged to unbearable inflation moves in cost of living, the 125% mortgages to catch up credit cards in the middle nineties, are now peaking into an forced jobless economy.  My bet is that Alexander Hamilton, being for nationalism, would still be very upset, for he knew well the result of a lawless society.

The fix to lack of jobs is simple.  Change the tax structure and take away the gravy train of untaxed production coming into the USA and tax it equally with American manufacturing and business in general.  Imagine an adjustment with foreign imports of, 23% or more now that we have opened the floodgate on the Monetary.  Add to that the removal of all direct tax on the citizens, causing an average 35% increase in employee wage for an income of 70 thousand.

If we take this correction the Socialists are offering, we will be as Alexis warned, on the path to submission of our Castle.  Let Freedom Reign.  Say no and do it right.  Free the people from the chains of taxes.  FairTax Please!!!

A Call To Action - Oppose Cap And Trade by Mike Huckabee

A Call To Action - Oppose Cap And Trade

By now, most of you have had an opportunity to learn about the Cap and Trade Bill (HR 2454) that the House of Representatives narrowly passed on June 25 by a vote of 219 to 212.  Now that bill is moving to the floor of the Senate.  It is time to make your voice heard.  I urge you to call members of the  Senate.  Tell them you are opposed to the Cap and Trade Legislation.  Give them specific reasons for your opposition.  If you can?t phone them, at least send them an email.  Here are some facts to remember.  The Cap and Trade Bill will add hundreds of dollars in costs to each American family.  The corresponding benefit is negligible.  The American people simply can?t afford the cost of legislation that is ill conceived and unwarranted.

Europe has already enacted their version of Cap and Trade.  It has been a dismal failure there.  In fact, it has resulted in the loss of millions of jobs in Europe.  Ask the Senators that you call if they have even bothered to read the legislation they are considering.  I urge you to call as many Senators as you can to oppose this legislation.  Urge the Senate to listen to the voices of the people.  Don't sell out the American people to special interests.

* A note from Mike Ford, OK-

Contact your Senator, then contact every Senator who is Democrat, or who is known as a "moderate" Republican. If you are not sure what to say, simply tell them:

"I am reminding the Senator that he/she works for me, and that if he/she votes FOR this bill, I will not only discontinue any support for him/her, but will tirelessly support his/her opponent in the next Primary or General election with financial and volunteer efforts."

Note:  The following Democratic Senators voted against Cap and Trade the last time it was before the Senate:

Byron Dorgan

Mary Landrieu

Sherrod Brown

Tim Johnson

Ben Nelson

I urge you to call as many Senators as you can to oppose this legislation.  Urge the Senate to listen to the voices of the people.  Don't sell out the American people to special interests.

Ronald Reagan~Confronting the Evil Empire & breaking the back of communist Regimes

President Reagan remembered communists' corrupt and dishonorable schemes from his days in Hollywood and wasn't afraid to confront evil when he saw it.
"I believe that communism is another sad, bizarre chapter in human history whose last pages even now are being written."
"How do you tell a communist?  Well, it's someone who reads Marx and Lenin.   And how do you tell an anti-Communist?  It's someone who understands Marx and Lenin."
The above is quoted from the Ronald Reagan Ranch calendar of 2008, as is below.  As noted above President Reagan thought of Communism in it's last days, but as reminded in the quote below, Communism has taken on a new form in attempting to conquer  the USA.
In his last address from the Oval Office, Ronald Reagan challenged us to reach young Americans with the history of our Country and with a patriotic spirit.  The President knew that if young Americans adopted freedom as their compass, then they will not lose their way.
"Freedom is not something to be secured in any one moment of time.  We must struggle to preserve it everyday.  And Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction."  Ronald Reagan

Weak heart? Keep aspirin by your bedside.

Why keep aspirin by your bedside?

About Heart Attacks
There are other symptoms of an heart attack besides the pain on the left arm. One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of sweating, however these symptoms may also occur less frequently.

Note: There may be no pain in the chest during a heart attack.

The majority of people (about 60%) who had an heart attack during their sleep, did not wake up.  However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from your deep sleep.
If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water.

 - phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by

 - say "heart attack!"

 - say that you have taken 2 aspirins.

 - take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door, and wait for their arrival and...

~ do NOT lie down ~
