Good morning!
I have a story for you today.
--
The worst has happened:you've had a severe injury or medical emergency. You're in the hospital, and the system has taken control. You're alone, and no one is speaking for you. In fact, they barely speak to you – as soon as you answer a question, they're gone. Rarely is there time for you to ask your own questions, and satisfactory answers are few. The sense of isolation and fear are profound.
Welcome to healthcare with no humanity, no soul. No conscience.
No one goes into healthcare with this in mind. Not patients, not clinicians. We all start with the ideal that care will be caring. Healthcare is rooted in historic dedication to acts of mercy and charity.
And yet, healthcare is growing more rigid, cold, distant - as though a wedge is forcing patients and practitioners apart.
The disconnect is not yet complete. We have time to ask:
What is crushing the caring heart of healthcare?
Out of the system's complexity, a trend stands out.
It begins when industries lobby for uniformity and market share. Legislators then direct regulators to enforce top-down mandates:
- Standardize
- Document every detail to prove compliance
- Less discretion over bedside time and practice
- Less time for patients
- Less individualized care
- Missed opportunities
- Patients fall between the cracks
- The cumulative effect of Moral Injury (aka Burn-out) drives practitioners out of healthcare
- Shortages tighten time restraints, intensifying the cycle
You can change the end of the story.
- Inform everyone you know in healthcare.
Many patients and clinicians are not aware of the new mandate to undergo Implicit Bias Training. They don't know the implications for an already-stressed system, or what they can do to stop the standardization cycle.
(If you received this email second hand, contact PolicyRNAbby@gmail.com to subscribe.) - Refresh memories and common sense:
Individuals are unique!
The purpose of government is to secure the inherent rights of life, liberty, and property including conscience. That's it.
This is a fixed space: when government goes beyond constitutional limits, space for our liberties decreases, and we suffer the consequences.
Especially in healthcare. - Share information about the new mandate for Implicit Bias Training on social media:
The June 10 Radio Interview featuring MHF starts about the 19 min mark.

If everyone knew all there is to know, they would not do half the things they do, including myself, therefore I must foregive them, including myself.
