Weekly Feature Oil and Excuses Foul our Waters From Ken Hoagland, Chairman, National Victory Campaign
Like most Americans I have watched in anger and horror as oil has poured into my beloved Gulf of Mexico. Honestly, it has made it sometimes hard to think about the dramatic, needed and overdue reform of a tax system that is crippling our economy and undermining the American Dream.
In past years I have dived the Gulf, fished its water and watched my boys play in its surf. This is not the first time that Americans have died because of cavalier attitudes toward safety.
Watching the pollution of the Gulf makes me sick to my stomach—a feeling only exceeded by my fury that so many have been injured or lost their lives needlessly.
Oil exploration, drilling and refining is inherently dangerous work that needs to be done but it obviously needs to be done right for the sake of both American workers and critically needed national petroleum supplies. Once again, the needs of our nation and the safety of workers have been have spectacularly and disastrously failed.
Here in Houston we see that, as usual, the people of the Gulf will pay for both government and private sector cut corners. Our fishing industry idled, livelihoods will be lost and family businesses bankrupt across the Gulf and millions of square miles of beautiful beaches and water fouled for years because of arrogance and incompetence. On the day we celebrate our Declaration of Independence from British royalty we can celebrate the very idea that can give American taxpayers independence from the corrupted tax system that so benefits American royalty. Make plans now to help advance the FairTax campaign using this special 30 minute national broadcast.
At 1:30 PM on July 4th your FairTax National Victory Campaign will sponsor the first ever FairTax nationwide television program!
The full length 30 minute show will air on the Fox Business Channel across the nation.
Those featured include Neal Boortz, Newt Gingrich, Michael Reagan, Mike Huckabee, yours truly and many average Americans who have come to know and appreciate the FairTax and what it can and will do for our nation.
It is rare, almost unheard of, for a citizen financed organization to sponsor a national television program! You have every right to be proud, very proud of your achievement!
As Neal Boortz says:
"The FairTax is the biggest, most massive transfer of power from the Government to the people in the history of this country since the Declaration of Independence freed us from the King of England."
And what better way than Independence Day for the very first FairTax nationwide television program?
We need to promote the show across the United States, to let people know about it and urge them to celebrate July 4th by learning about the FairTax—the New Declaration of Independence for these United States! Read more»

In The News From the Austin American Statesman: Fair Tax would be ... fair Re: May 31 letter "Consumption tax would be unfair."
A value-added tax would be very unfair but, the Fair Tax suggested by Scott Burns is not.
The Fair Tax has a monthly rebate to all citizens equal to tax paid by spending income on new products and services up to the poverty level. Thus, the very poor receive more than they are taxed, and at poverty-level income, the net tax is zero.
More than $22 million was spent to develop the Fair Tax plan that eliminates payroll taxes for individuals and businesses (fairtax.org). David Adams Read more» From Blue Ridge Now Bikers get fired up about fair tax reform By James Shea Times-News Staff Writer

Harley-Davidson motors roared to life as a dozen motorcycle riders pulled out of Grass Roots Cafe in Horse Shoe and headed south, police escort in tow.
"We got out there and made some noise — made some noise with motorcycles," Matt McLean said.
His father, Mike McLean, is traveling the United States on his motorcycle in support of the fair tax. This proposed tax eliminates the federal income tax and replaces it with a national sales tax. People only pay a tax when they purchase goods and service instead of having taxes taken out of their paychecks.
Proponents say it eliminates the numerous loopholes in the current tax system and gives individuals a choice as to how much taxes they pay.
A group of supporters came out Wednesday and helped Mike champion the cause. Mike plans to visit numerous communities around the country and hold events that support the fair tax. He estimates he will ride 17,000 miles this summer.
"The type of tax reform that is needed is not going to happen with the current tax code," Mike said.
He learned about the fair tax from his wife, Carol Adams McLean. She gave him a book on the concept, and he has embraced the idea with passion. Read more» From the Times Herald FairTax makes strongest possible case for reform May 30, 2010
Eighty economists have written to Congress and the White House that the FairTax, with $22 million of peer-reviewed research behind it, is the best federal tax system to create economic growth.
By taxing what comes out of the economy--consumption -- instead of what makes the economy grow-- work, savings and investment -- the tax base is dramatically expanded and every worker takes home paychecks free of all federal withholding and payroll taxes.
Foreign investment, estimated in the $10 trillion range, comes, upon enactment, rushing into the American economy creating needed jobs.
The benefits to the nation and every taxpayer are not enough to easily overcome Washington insiders' lucrative self-interest in an income tax system that allows Congress to play politics with the nation's wealth. Besides the great launch that was well attended in Horse Shoe, NC, there were many memorable events along the way. These include the highest point on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Tail of the Dragon in Deals Gap, TN, a motorcycle milestone of 318 turns in eleven miles, the Atlanta Convoy ride around I-285 flying the FairTax flag and riding through Royston, SC, home of baseball legend Ty Cobb. We were at Hog Happenin in Lincolnton, in North Carolina with Uncle Sam, met Jack Jackson, SC FairTax director in Summerville and passed through Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA, all leading up to a wonderful night in Daytona Beach with the Florida Volusia County Freedom Riders and other FairTax supporters.
There are way too many stories, but all are filled with wonderful engagement with grassroots Americans who learn about the FairTax and want to help. Kristina Bouters of the Volusia County chapter organized a great Meet and Greet with Florida candidates for local and state offices. All were enlightened about the FairTax, and the participants varied from long time supporters to new recruits. Much progress was made and I am certain we will get the job done.
