Michigan Healthcare Freedom(MHF) Insights: Who are the Proper Guardians of Health?

Good morning!

Who are the proper guardians of health?

Some give the title to MDHHS. The department's mission statement reads,
MDHHS provides opportunities, services, and programs that promote a healthy, safe, and stable environment for residents to be self-sufficient.

If the inconsistencies haven't already caused you to choke, let's spell them out.
  1. MDHHS destabilized Michigan with COVID rulemaking.
  2. It has made Michigan 8th in the nation for Medicaid enrollment, proof that residents are not self-sufficient, and making them even less so.
  3. MDHHS diminishes Michigan's sustainability, as noted in last week's MDHHS Insights.
Another strike: MDHHS is contracted with Planned Parenthood of Michigan to pay over $4 Million for Family Planning Services. This is not helping Michigan's birth rate or long term health.
Thankfully, there are other contenders for the title.

Individuals

A friend recently loaned me a book with this gem:
Each is the proper guardian of his own health, whether bodily or mental and spiritual.
- John Stuart Mill

It affirms the right and responsibility of each individual to fend for himself. The right of self-defense translates well to health. It also passes the "reversal" truth test - granting someone else guardianship implies diminished capacity.

Some earn special right to the title.

The irony? Michigan healthcare professionals are the guardians of health trusted with complex, critical patient care. Yet, many are being denied the basic right to guard their own health as they see fit.

Henry Ford Hospitals came first, mandating their 33,000 employees to meet a September 10 deadline.
This week Trinity Healthcare announced a September 21 deadline for their 24,000 employees.

Healthcare professionals who don't fit the rigid mold feel alone and frustrated. Many have already quit, fed up with COVID-19 boom and bust hours and schizophrenic state regulations. The new Implicit Bias Theory education mandate didn't help.

This week, Indeed posted 13,711 healthcare jobs in Detroit, 2,788 in Grand Rapids, and 1,513 in Flint. An irreplaceable core of our communities is being whittled away.

Who will defend them?

Montana and Arkansas have banned employee mandates. Michigan has a bill languishing unheard in committee
Your call could help get it moving.

Michigan communities are rallying in defense of hospital employee rights (see photo below).
Your attendance can make a difference.

Send this email to the people you know in healthcare. Let them know they aren't alone, and they have options!
Your networking could deter a third hospital system from laying down a mandate.

Thanks for all you do for healthcare freedom!

Best,
Abby
